SMART boards, computer suites and CCTV all switch back on for a full day at once in September, and heating starts firing most mornings by October. It's the best point in the year to check last winter's thermostat setting is still the right one, since a schedule left over from a colder week in January can quietly overheat a room for weeks.
What A School Actually Spends
Behind staff pay, energy is usually a school’s biggest fixed cost.
That’s why business energy deserves a bursar’s attention every year, not just when a contract happens to expire. A typical primary spends around £31k a year on energy, a secondary closer to £90k, though the real figure depends heavily on the size and age of the site.
On a per-metre basis, the average primary uses about 119 kWh per square metre a year, some way above the government’s efficiency benchmark of 110. That gap is usually where the easiest savings sit: a newer building with better controls can run well under it, while an older one with single glazing and an ageing boiler runs well above.
The Empty Building Problem
Most school business energy contracts run for one to three years, agreed months in advance. When nobody diaries the renewal date, perhaps a business manager moves on or a trust absorbs a new school mid-year, the contract quietly lapses into a “deemed” rate, which suppliers can set well above the market. We regularly find sites that have been overpaying for over a year without anyone noticing.

Maintained schools & academies
The classic 8:30-3:30, five-day, term-time-only pattern: one hot lunch service, ICT suites running all day, and a hall that often gets let out to community groups in the evenings, adding load well outside the school day.
Colleges & universities
Halls of residence, labs and a summer conference trade mean colleges keep consuming near term-time levels all year, unlike schools. Most are already on half-hourly metering, where flexible or blended-rate contracts tend to pay off.
Independent & boarding schools
Boarders keep these sites occupied for more of the calendar, with kitchens running three meals a day, seven days a week, in term. Charitable status can also mean reduced VAT and Climate Change Levy exemption, a saving bursars often miss.

Do school holidays reduce our standing charges?
No. The standing charge is a fixed daily fee for being connected to the network, and it's billed whether the building is full of pupils or completely empty.
Are nurseries covered by Ofgem's microbusiness protections?
Usually, yes. Ofgem's microbusiness rules apply to consumers using under 100,000 kWh of electricity or 293,000 kWh of gas a year with fewer than ten employees (or equivalent turnover), which describes most standalone nurseries.
What is a Letter of Authority (LOA)?
This is a simple document that gives Ecosave Gas and Power the legal right to talk to suppliers on your behalf. It does not sign you into a contract; it simply lets us find the data we need to save you money.
Does Ecosave work with British Gas and Eon?

Do we need a half-hourly meter?
If your site uses more than 100,000 kWh of electricity a year, Ofgem requires half-hourly settlement, which most secondary schools, colleges and larger primaries already have. Below that threshold it's optional but the half-hourly data makes it much easier to see where the cost comes from.
How long does the switch take?
The 'paperwork' takes minutes. The actual switch happens in the background over 2–4 weeks. There is never a loss of power or gas during the transition.
